Taking the course in Alberta

Alberta's CFSC and CRFSC courses must be delivered by an instructor currently designated by Alberta's Chief Firearms Officer (CFO). Confirm an instructor's current designation directly before booking or paying for a course.

Alberta's provincial hunter education program is run separately from the CFSC/CRFSC by the Alberta Hunter Education Instructors' Association (AHEIA). It is a different certificate from a different authority — some instructors are qualified to teach both and schedule them back-to-back, but completing one does not complete the other.

The written and practical tests follow the same federal standard in Alberta as everywhere else in Canada. Course dates are generally easiest to find around Calgary and Edmonton; smaller centres may have fewer scheduled sittings.

Most first-time adult applicants complete approved safety training before sending their application to the RCMP Canadian Firearms Program. Course completion is not a guarantee of a licence; the RCMP assesses each application.
