Taking the course in British Columbia

In British Columbia, the CFSC and CRFSC must be taught by an instructor holding a current designation from the provincial Chief Firearms Officer. Confirm current designation directly with the instructor before paying for a course.

B.C.'s hunter education requirement (the CORE program, administered by the BC Wildlife Federation) is a separate credential from the CFSC/CRFSC. Some providers schedule both across a weekend for applicants who plan to hunt, but they remain two distinct certificates from different bodies.

Written and practical testing follow the same national format used across Canada. In larger centres like Vancouver and Victoria, course dates tend to run more often than in smaller communities — book ahead if you need a specific weekend.

How to choose a local provider

  1. Confirm the course is the one you need: CFSC, CRFSC, or both.
  2. Ask whether written and practical testing, materials, tax, and retests are included.
  3. Confirm the location, schedule, access needs, cancellation policy, and current instructor authorization.
